Hungry Bowl Pet Food Drive hauls in 2,700 lbs. to benefit local animals
By James Neal, Staff WriterEnid News and EagleThe Enid News and EagleWed Dec 21, 2011, 10:46 PM CST
ENID — Enid’s third annual Hungry Bowl Pet Food Drive hauled in more than 2,700 pounds of pet food this month, to benefit local animals and their families.
The benefit food drive, organized by Bark Avenue Pet Taxi and Sitter Service, collected food for the Enid Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals food pantry, at 10 drop sites throughout the city.
Bark Avenue owner Kyla Culbert said the food drive originated as a concept of Pet Sitters International “so that professional pet sitters could organize pet food drives in their own community to benefit their local animal shelters.”
Culbert said the collected food will be distributed through Enid SPCA’s pet food bank, to assist local families in need who might be having trouble covering their pet expenses.
“The goal of the pet food drive is to drastically decrease the number of pets who might be surrendered to the shelter because their owners cannot provide basic care for their pets due to financial reasons,” Culbert said.
Culbert set a goal of collecting 2,800 pounds of pet food this year for the Enid SPCA pet food bank, a significant increase from last year’s collections of less than 1,900 pounds.
This year’s donations came in a few pounds short of the goal, with 2,711 pounds donated, but Culbert and Enid SPCA were pleased with the results.
“While donations were down last year, people really rallied this year to help us reach our goal of 2,800 pounds collected,” Culbert said. “Since we were only short a few pounds of that goal, this year’s drive has been a huge success.”
Culbert said the success of this year’s pet food drive would not have been possible without the generosity of local donors.
“From the local businesses who donated supplies to those who hosted collection sites ... and every person who generously contributed food, toys and supplies, their support is very much appreciated,” Culbert said. “The past two years have been difficult for most people, yet they give generously each year to support our community’s pets.”
Enid SPCA Executive Director Vickie Grantz said the donated food will be put to good use, and will help families in need feed their pets through the winter.
“All of the food we received here we hand out to the public as they’re in need,” Grantz said.
To date in 2011, Enid SPCA’s food pantry has assisted 258 families with 907 pets, which in turn helps keep those animals out of the shelter and with their owners.
She said the donations from the Hungry Bowl Pet Food Drive “will help keep our pantry full for several months, which will allow us to keep those animals fed through the winter.”
“That’s crucial, especially for the outdoor animals, because they require a lot more food when it’s cold outside,” Grantz said.
Grantz said Enid SPCA staff are “very pleased” with the results of the pet food drive, “but we do accept food throughout the year to go towards the pantry program.”
Additional donations are needed through the course of the year, she said, to help families in need and cut down on the number of animals surrendered to shelters.
For information on the Enid SPCA pet food pantry or to make a donation, call 233-1325 or visit in person at 1116 Overland Trail.
Culbert already is planning next year’s Hungry Bowl Pet Food Drive.
“Bark Avenue has committed to sponsoring the drive each year,” Culbert said. “It is our hope that everyone will give each year, as Christmastime is the season to give and to share.”

Hungry Bowl Pet Food Drive takes in 1,800 pounds of food for SPCA
Enid News and Eagle
ENID — The second annual Hungry Bowl Pet Food Drive collected 1,857 pounds of pet food for Enid Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Kyla Culbert, owner of Bark Avenue Pet Taxi and Sitter Service LLC, organized the drive and delivered the proceeds to Vickie Fox, director of Enid SPCA.
The food is made available to residents who sometimes struggle economically to provide for their pets.
The drive collected 1,387 pounds of dog food and 470 pounds of cat food. In addition, toys, treats, accessories and other supplies also were donated.
“While donations were down some from last year’s total of 2,700 pounds, considering today’s economy we are still very pleased with the results,” Culbert said.
Culbert said she wanted to thank everyone who participated in the food drive, from local businesses who donated supplies to those who hosted collection sites and each person who contributed food, toys and supplies.
